About This Tool

Calculate the hours and minutes between a start time and an end time, subtract unpaid breaks, and get the decimal-hours figure payroll and timesheet systems expect. Overnight shifts that cross midnight are handled automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do decimal hours work?

Minutes are divided by 60: 7 hours 45 minutes = 7.75 decimal hours. Timesheet and payroll software usually wants this format.

What about overnight shifts?

If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift crosses midnight and adds 24 hours.

How are breaks handled?

The break minutes you enter are subtracted from the total duration — enter 0 for no break.

Can I calculate weekly hours?

This tool covers one time span. Run each day and add the decimal totals, or try our Date Difference Calculator for day counts.
